Office
Originally this room was being used as a storage unit/junk room
Then one day, I found out I was pregnant. It was a total shock as it was unplanned but my brain immediately started thinking, if I’m already this tired, I need to start clearing out this room so it can be ready for baby.
I started planning and brainstorming different designs but then life happened and we lost the baby.
Regardless I still decided to fix up the room because it was a complete disaster (see photos) and if we eventually decide to have a baby, the room will be ready.
I also really wanted a place where I can go relax. My husband has a man-cave so it’s only fair for me to have a quiet place too.
I started designing a multi-functional craft room with the mindset of it being a transitional baby room in the future.
I took everything out of the room and started with the floors.
As a backstory, when we bought the house it had old, grimy carpet throughout. We were pleasantly surprised to find hardwoods underneath. Since our house is older, the hardwoods needed some serious attention.
I galloped on over to Home Depot to rent a drum sander and began the strenuous sanding process. Once the wood was fully stripped and smooth, I filled all the seams with wood filler and sanded one final time.
I decided to stick with the natural look of the floor and seal it with my favorite hardwood sealant.
I want to stop right here and focus on what I just said.
I have a favorite hardwood sealer. Who am I?
Bona Mega Floor sealer. It bonds to the wood really well and leaves a clear coat in comparison to a standard polyurethane. If you were to put a standard polyurethane onto the wood (without stain) it would eventually end up yellowing which isn’t a look I prefer.
I also use this sealer for wood tables and butcher block countertops.
Once the floor was finished I thought about the desk. My husband and I found 2 cabinets at Habitat for Humanity Restore for about $120 total. The base cabinet we found was way too tall for a desk. So I shortened it and cut it in half.
Downstairs in our basement was 2 unused doors collecting dust. I used those to create the desk top.
Everything was primed with killz primer and then painted with a bright white primer+paint from Home Depot.
I designed the desk so it can be consolidated to one wall in the future rather than take over majority of the room as it does now. That way, a twin and eventually a queen can easily fit in the space.
I made floating shelves with scrap wood and mdf for an added decor element. I know floating shelves is becoming less and less popular but I needed to break up the space as well as have a place to display some personal decor.
Another major renovation for this room was the closet. I wanted to create a closet for hanging clothes, storing craft projects and eventually use the closet as a changing table area.
Note: A good idea if you ever are renovating your house; make it super easy for future you to be able to get to your plumbing and electrical. Future you won’t have to rip down drywall and start all over. That sounds terrible. That is why I installed a door in the closet that opens up to the plumbing to our master bath shower.
I installed closet lighting to finish off the closet. I still have yet to install closet doors but for now, I’m just using a curtain.
As for my cozy corner, I went to habitat for humanity restore and found a light green, deep chair (actually it is a piece of a sofa) for only $75. I love it! I spent some quality time deep cleaning it. I really love the way it meshes with the rug and target throw pillows/blanket.
Check out The Fan Ottoman under Upcycle Projects for how I made my cozy corner ottoman from a fan, pool noodles and canvas bags!
All tools I have used to create this office can be shopped under our Amazon Shop.
I’m still working on this website everyday so please be patient as it’s takes some time to update. I know I’m talking to maybe 1 person out there in the universe (my mom). Love you mom!
